Yes, you can certainly scratch the iPhone 4 (updated with more photos)

Well, this is not encouraging. The photo you’re seeing above is our leader Joshua’s iPhone 4 review unit, snapped by Ryan Block just moments ago. Ryan pointed out that there are some nasty scratches on the back of the phone. While we don’t have any better photos of it at the moment, Josh told us that they’re hard to see unless in bright light, but they look pretty notable to us for a five day-old unit made of Gorilla Glass. We’ll get some better photos for you as soon as humanly possible.

Update: We should note that while iFixit has said that the new iPhone’s front panel is made of Gorilla Glass (and they tend to be right about these things), the material on the back of the phone has not been positively identified, though it is also a hardened glass.

Update 2: We’ve added three higher quality photos after the break, and seen the scratch with our own eyes. It’s what we would call “incredibly minor,” not visible at all dead on, but in bright light at an angle… well see for yourself if the photos.

Sony outs water resistant Walkman NWZ-W250 series

Sony‘s just quietly unleashed a new water resistant, wearable Walkman — the NWZ-250. This tiny little guy comes in both 2GB and 4GB capacity models, and apparently boasts an up to 11 hour battery life. Weighing in at 43 grams, this one’s probably perfect for even the most weight sensitive of ears, and it’ll be available in black, silver, lime green, and magenta. You’ll be able to pick up one (or more) of these later this month for $60. Full press release is after the break.

Dean Kamen shows off his prosthetic arm on The Colbert Report

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Dean_Kamen_shows_his_prosthetic_arm_on_The_Colbert_Report’; Dean Kamen showed up on The Colbert Report last night to show off Luke — the advanced prosthetic arm he’s been working on with DARPA and the Defense Department for the past few years. Besides the requisite Segway jokes (and Colbert’s are pretty funny, we’ll give him that), it’s pretty heart-warming to see Kamen and his crazy awesome arm hanging out with our favorite faux Republican. Just more proof that Colbert is a major gadget nerd. The video’s after the break — hit the read link if you want to watch the entire episode.

Hey, look at that: iFixit’s ripping an iPad to shreds

That’s right folks, the iPad has been available for a little less than two hours by our count and the folks at iFixit are already happily destroying one of these magical bad boys. Now, as usual, they’re being pretty meticulous, so they’re still very early in the process, and we haven’t learned much — but we’ll update you as they find out the good stuff. First thoughts? Well, it sure is weird (and a little bit exiting) to see an iPad torn asunder so brazenly. There’s one more shot after the break — hit up the source link for the full set.

Update: So the iFixit disassembly continues, and some interesting tidbits have emerged. The battery is pretty huge — a 3.75V, 24.8 watt-hour job, weighing in at 148 grams. There are some significant differences between the retail unit and what we saw at the FCC, including the A4 processor, which looks to be manufactured by Samsung.

Update 2
: Talk about some wild findings. The iFixit crew has discovered that the iPad’s battery has 5.5x the capacity of the battery in the iPhone, with two batteries wired in parallel, for a total of 24.8 Watt-hours. On average, the unit sips just 2.5 Watts (one-fifth the power of a compact fluorescent bulb), and the rear case is machined from a single billet of aluminum. We’re told that the “empty void in the upper right corner is where the cellular communications board would go in the 3G iPad,” and “the A4 is a Package-on-Package (PoP), with at least three layers of circuitry layered on top of each other.” Care for more? Head past the break for the bullet points.

Australian researchers unveil bionic eye prototype, implants coming in 2013

We’ve been hearing about things like bionic eyeballs — specifically cameras which are implantable into human eyes — for quite some time now. But it looks like Bionic Vision Australia has actually developed a real, working prototype. BVA, along with researchers at the University of New South Wales, have shown off their advanced prototype of the “eye,” which boasts a pair of glasses mounted with a camera, a pocket-mounted CPU, and a wireless electrode chip which must be surgically implanted in the eye. The electrode chip has 98 electrodes which stimulates cells on the optical nerve, resulting in improved vision for those with vision problems resulting from optical nerve problems. Clinical trials are scheduled to begin later this year in Melbourne, with the hope that actual patients will be treated sometime in 2013. Kudos! The full press release is after the break.

EATR’s engine officially complete, and this robot’s one step closer to reality

If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably been keeping pretty close tabs on EATR, the biomass-to-power robot that’s been making people nervous for some time now. Well, EATR’s engine — which is being built by Cyclone Power Technologies — is complete, and the drone is now one giant leap closer to living in actual reality with us. The completed steam engine, called WHE, is a six-cylinder external heat engine which can generate up to 18 horsepower of mechanical power. As previously clarified by EATR’s makers (a project that’s getting help from the University of Maryland and DARPA), the robot will not feed on things like animals… or humans. No, this is no zombified drone — EATR will harvest only plant matter for energy — which, if you ask us, makes the whole thing much more mundane. Regardless, we’ll be keeping our eyes on this project as it moves forward. The full press release is after the break.

T-shirt modded to let you know when you have new emails, won’t tell you why your friends are avoiding you

You probably don’t have enough reminders that you’re always a little behind, right? Well Chris and his wife Madeline decided to make one more for themselves: a t-shirt that lights up when you have new emails, and also tells you the number in your inbox. Using an Arduino Lilypad microcontroller, a few LEDs, conductive thread, and a Bluetooth dongle to communicate with an Android phone nearby (which has access to the inbox), Chris took a custom printed shirt and rigged up this badboy. It’s actually pretty good looking as far as these things go, but we still don’t know if we need this in our already alert-ridden lives. Regardless, the video’s after the break if you’re thinking about cobbling together your own.

[Thanks, Juergen ]
